Floor Lamp providing direct light
Designed by Achille and Piergiacomo Castiglioni, the innovative lamp Arco is one of the most popular pieces of the Italian design.
Arco is a type of light shade unlinked to the ceiling. Its creation comes from the idea of lighting from above part of a reading or dinner area without the limitations due to anchoring the light shade to the ceiling, generally by a cord in its central area, and with the characteristic of being easy to move from a part of a room to another.
The lamp is composed of a base in white Carrara marble (or black in a limited series), a semicircular arch ("arco") made of three stainless steel parts, and a reflector in polished aluminium containing the light bulb. The function on / off is on a pedal switch attached to the main cable.
Inspired to the street lamps it sends the light at two meters of distance from its base. This allows, for example, to place its marble base on a corner of a room and make the light directly reach the surface of a table.
The lamp has a peculiar feature, typical of the genial research for functionality of the designers Castiglioni: the presence of a transversal hole in the highest part of the marble base that enables two people to comfortably transport the lamp simply by inserting a stick (like a broom stick) which goes from a side to another functioning like a double handle (the weight of the lamp is Kg 65).
